1. Preparation: Setting the Stage

Before you head out, make sure you have the right "toolkit" for success:

Never attach a long line to a collar. If your dog bolts and hits the end of a 10-meter line, the force on their neck can be dangerous. Always use a sturdy harness.

✔ No Wrapping

What if your dog ignores your recall? 
Do not repeat the cue (this just teaches them they can ignore the first five times). Instead, stay silent, gather the line to gently guide them toward you, and reward them once they are close.

4. Advancing to "Trailing" and the "Fade-Out"

Once your dog is 90% reliable on the line, drop it. Let the line drag on the ground behind them. This gives them total freedom while allowing you to step on the line if they decide a squirrel is more interesting than your chicken.

When they’ve mastered the trailing phase, start the Fade-Out: Gradually shorten the line by cutting off small sections over several weeks. This prevents the dog from realizing the exact moment they are "free," keeping the recall habit strong.
